October 2024: Positive Mindset

Happy Fall students and parents! This month we are focusing on fostering a positive mindset which will help us reduce stress and anxiety.  At Glendon School, this means that we are working on changing our negative thoughts into more positive ones. A positive mindset is a mental attitude that focuses on the bright side of life, encourages resilience, and fosters a belief that we can grow and improve through effort and learning. It’s about looking at obstacles as opportunities, embracing challenges, and believing in our ability to change. 

Fostering a positive mindset can make a significant difference in students' well-being. Incorporating breathing strategies and relaxation techniques can really help them manage stress and anxiety effectively.

Here are a few ideas to complement our focus this month:

  1. Positive Affirmations: Be your own cheerleader! Instead of criticizing yourself for mistakes, remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments. Positive affirmations can reinforce your self-belief.

  2. Mindfulness Moments: Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or simple mindfulness exercises can help clear your mind and refocus your thoughts on the present moment, fostering a sense of calm and positivity.

  3. Gratitude Journals: At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect on what you’re thankful for. This can be as simple as enjoying a sunny day, a compliment from a friend, or mastering a tough concept in class. Keeping a gratitude journal can help reinforce this habit.

  4. Creative Outlets: Use art, music, or writing as ways to express your feelings and reinforce positivity.

  5. Surround yourself with positivity: Encourage spending time with friends who uplift and encourage you. Seek out mentors or teachers who inspire you and let their positivity influence your own.

  6. Set realistic goals: Break down your academic and personal goals into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small it may seem.

Did you know that yoga helps manage anxiety, improves emotional regulation, boosts self- esteem and increases mindfulness, among other positive benefits? Start encouraging yoga in your home when children are young and see all the benefits yourself. 

 

This month, our grade 9s are beginning their training as Community Helpers on October 10th, which is also World Mental Health Day. The Community Helpers Program is a suicide prevention program that is targeted for youth and adults ages 12 and over. It can be delivered in both school and community settings.
